Exploring Linguistic Creativity via Predictive Lexicology

چکیده
Creativity is not just a matter of generation, but of interpretation, since for creativity to be recognized, it must be interpreted (and not rejected) by other agents. In the domain of lexical creativity, which concerns the generation of innovative word forms, we can describe two kinds of creative process: explanatory lexicology, in which the lexical creativity of others is appreciated and understood; and predictive lexicology, in which an agent creates lexical innovations ab initio. We focus on the latter process in this paper.

Memory-Based Lexical Acquisition and Processing
Current approaches to computational lexicology in language technology are knowledge-based (competence-oriented) and try to abstract away from specific formalisms, domains, and applications. This results in severe complexity, acquisition and reusability bottlenecks. As an alternative, we propose a particular performance-oriented approach to Natural Language Processing based on automatic memory-b...
متن کاملLexis as most local context: towards an SFL approach to lexicology
The world of lexis is vast and complex and it is generally accepted in psycholinguistics that it is represented as part of a large complex network. However, in systemic functional linguistics (SFL) modelling lexis has remained a relatively underdeveloped area of the theory. The ideas underpinning this paper stem from exploring the interface of context and lexicology, asking how SFL does and cou...
متن کاملExploring The Relationship Between Mood and Creativity in Rock Lyrics

The linguistic fund, that is, the actual lexical inventory of a language, is always considerably larger than the sum total of the contents of dictionaries for that language. The exploitation of the latter. within machine-readable dictionaries should therefore allow a far more accurate...
متن کاملAutomatically Identifying Humorous and Persuasive Language Produced during a Creative Problem-Solving Task
Despite being an important component of problem-solving ability, relatively little is known about the linguistic features of creativity and the related constructs of elaboration, humor, and persuasion. In order to better understand the linguistic features of these constructs, two analyses were performed to examine relationships between linguistic features and human judgments of humor, persuasio...
